Princess Freckles and the Forever Kingdom is an autobiographical multi-character solo seri-comedy about innocence, forgiveness and the journey in between the two. It follows a family through three generations of life in Africa; the magic and mysticism of the African countryside, the colour and the beauty of a childhood wrapped in mud baths and elephant rides, and the chilling realization that prejudice is unprejudiced, discrimination does not discriminate when choosing its victims, and not every forever is a happily ever after. Princess Freckles opens one family’s “that thing that we’re never supposed to talk about” box and dares to invite the audience inside.

Rich with relevance, Princess Freckles eloquently balances the intrigue and beauty of Africa with a story that anyone-anywhere-anytime, can relate to. The show dares to ask the uncomfortable, sweep-that-under-the-rug kind of questions, and yet does so with the innocence and sincerity of a child trying to understand the world around her. Racism, forgiveness, lost innocence, healing, home, identity, humanity and even politics come into play, against the visually and emotionally scintillating backdrop of an African child’s fantastical imagination. Adrian Bourgeois, a local musician, states; “I cannot remember too many times that I've been this moved and blown away by such a raw and emotionally honest performance.”

A massive thanks must be said to the United Solo Theatre Festival, for giving me a stage in a dreamworld; to my director, Jessica Lynn Johnson, for her guidance and belief in this show; to everyone who came and saw Princess Freckles at United Solo - including my family, who trekked many miles to be there - and, most especially, to my incredible team, who infuse excellence into everything they do, and who define magic, passion, wonder and goodness. The unbelievable sacrifices that Joseph James Pucciarella, Taylor Song and Matthew Justmann made for this show, and the selflessness and generosity that they carry with them everywhere they go, blow me away. They are the epitome of friendship and chivalry, and I would not have made it through the fest without their level heads, calm in the chaos, constant encouragement and wicked senses of humour.
Thank you will never be enough.
